Brewing the Battle Ax Brown Ale

So, this is my brother-in-law's microbrewery he built in his garage. The left keg/kettle is for boiling water. Inside the kettle is an electric heating element that can heat the water to over 220 F. Also in the kettle is copper tubing that runs the wort (what will become beer after fermenting) from the second through the hot water with out directly coming in contact with the heating source. This prevents burning of the vegetable matter in the liquid. In the upper left of the image ins the control panel that automates the entire process of the recipe (which can be altered). Anyway it's really complicated to explain and it takes about 3 hours to make the beer and 8 weeks to ferment / age the beer. But the end result has been most tasty!

Yeah, so I have become obsessed with fishing. Here I am Ice and Fly fishing at the same time. The Kokanee salmon are spawning this time of year right along this bank. It's only 6" deep and you can see hundreds of salmon fighting and feeding. Once they are done, they all die. Unfortunately for us, we arived a little late in the season and the were not very good to eat. Although 2.5 weeks prior, we caught 30 and they were delicious.

Hogback Homestead - a cabin in the middle of nowhere

So, the next few posts are dedicated to my favorite US state and the adventures it has to offer any day of the week (and to my good friend Cassandra).

So a few weeks ago we discovered that the National Forest Service offers cabins for rent for $60 a nite! The first cabin we stayed at was called the Hogback Homestead - a cabin in the middle of nowhere. There is no electricity, no cell service, and no running water, and no civilization (though there is a hand well pump outside, it is not functional in the winter). You will be completely disconected from society, and at the same time never be bored at all.

Although the cabin does not have electricity, it does have something unique that I had never seen in a house before. The entire house has natural has lighting. The lights run off natural gas along with the stove. It's so cool!
